2020 Sketchbooks

clay, rocks, soil, gum arabic, paper

2020

10.25” x 8.25”

In March of 2020 I began to use clay I unearthed from my garden to create paintings of my surrounding landscapes. I collected clay, soil, and rocks to create watercolors I could use to record the places they came from. I ground all pigments by hand, using mortar and pestles and mulled them with gum arabic to make watercolors which I could take on site. These plein air paintings exist as a visual and geologic record of sites in Winston Salem, NC and Sag Harbor, NY.
